Run Hide Fight: Infidels 2026

This review contains spoilers.

Bafflingly poor writing and rhetoric. The terrorists just randomly start lecturing liberals about what America stands for. It's more like someone aimlessly waving their hands in front of them instead of actually making a single argument. There's also no concept of "show, don't tell" in this movie. Anything the writer wants to tell you is just flat out explained to you as if you were a toddler.

Anyone stupid enough to watch this will be stupid enough to fall for its fear-mongering affirmation crap. I worry for these people. They really don't know the world they live in anymore.

Stand by Me 1986

This review contains spoilers.

I've always felt that my friends played a crucial, thankless role in my formative years: all of that trouble, that joy, and that honest conversation. This movie gets that. It intentionally offers the perspective from the view of a grown adult, who knows those years are long gone. I hope in that inevitable period where I fully become an adult I see it in this same bittersweet way, and don't forget what it was like to be a kid.

Synecdoche, New York 2008

This review contains spoilers.

As the main character lives through his life, he feels like years pass without warning, changing everything before he can mentally catch up with it. Amazingly, that's exactly what watching this feels like. Every ten minutes the plot goes in a different direction that you're never quite ready for, but by the end you still feel a sense of cohesion. There's bits of foreshadowing and reflection thrown in everywhere to give you an idea of what Caden is feeling without just straight up telling you. Just a fantastic use of the visual medium.

(This movie is also a great reminder to live in the moment. Caden spends a lot of his time trying to interpret his past as his present is flying by. As you'll see, he never really does figure it out until he's on his deathbed. A good lesson for us all, maybe?)

OK Orchestra 2021

This review contains spoilers.

Anxiety is criminally unexplored territory in mainstream media, and I'm always happy to see it given some love. I reject the notion that embracing the topic is 'cringe'.

That said, AJR's music is a slap in the face. Every single song on this album is about social anxiety, yet it always comes off as extremely whiny and childish. The creators are middle-aged men who clearly haven't figured it out, but they think they can act as a voice for lonely people. They romanticize fear instead of treating it. It's harmful. If you want help, get therapy.

Criticizing the musicality of this album is low-hanging fruit. It's shopping mall wigga music, and no one is debating this.

Backrooms 2026

This review contains spoilers.

Not all that scary, but definitely unsettling. There is rarely a moment where you know what's going on. The plot is as minimalist as the rooms, but it's enough to show off what the movie has to offer. I love how the room designs lie right in that uncanny valley of just vaguely familiar. I felt the actors did a good job making it feel like you, the viewer, is exploring the Backrooms yourself.

(Note: This is my first time watching anything Backrooms-related. There may be some novelty bias)

I Can Only Imagine 2018

This movie has many problems, but the one that bugged me the most was the soundtrack. Every single scene insists on having music blasting over it, even when it is completely unnecessary. I've never seen a sports movie quite like this. It follows very few conventions and lets you in on the character of Mark in such a personal way that you can't help but root for him. It never shies away from his flaws, either. You get all of him, like it or not. I appreciated the minimal editing and slower pacing so I could get time to really digest everything without all that noise. I love how he is written as a gentle giant and destroys his opponents in an almost cartoonish way. He is a vibrant character that dominates every scene he's in. Mark and Dawn's characters are great and add a lot to the story, too. In a strange way, this movie's down-to-earth vibe comforted me. I highly recommend giving it a watch for its unique take on Mark's life as well as its impressive display of the wrestling sport.

The best parts of this album are the dreamy, trance-like tracks (I'll Be Your Mirror, Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale). It also goes to the complete other extreme with grating, droning tracks like Heroin and Venus in Furs, which work very well. Thrown in are a couple mid rock songs.

To Pimp A Butterfly 2015

This review contains spoilers.

This album introduced me to the concept of a rapper who isn't just a celebrity, but a genuine artist. The heavy, deeply meaningful lyrics were such whiplash for me that it spoiled me to the point of not being able to listen to much else. It was the first time I truly appreciated rap.

In a lot of rap, you'll often get the impression that the dude just got out of bed and started recording. They sound bored or uninterested. Kendrick, however, is a performer. He packs emotional weight into every nook and cranny of his lyrics, especially with songs like u and The Blacker The Berry. You don't even have to know the full history of what he's talking about to appreciate and sympathize with his plight.

Needless to say, the lyrics themselves are some of the finest in the rap game. These Walls is just one big double entendre with value as both a comedic and a serious track, depending on how you listen to it. His rhyme schemes are complex and even dizzying at times, much like MF Doom or young Eminem. He's my absolute favorite "wordsmith."

The effortless mix of jazz and rap is the cherry on top. For Free? is just an interlude but is one of my favorite tracks just because of how impossible the production and flow is. Like how do you even come up with that😭

This is by far my favorite rap album. Give it a listen immediately if you're into rap as an art. It clears anything you'll get from celebrity "rappers" like Carti and Drake.

Everything about this movie is incredibly well-done, but what caught my attention most was the world-building. Each time a new creature or idea is introduced, you are left with a few unanswered questions that keep you engaged. As the story progresses, you sink into the world, but never get fully used to it. Needless to say, the animation and soundtrack work wonders- you almost forget it's just a movie. My only confusion was with the use of magic. The uncanny realism of The Polar Express meets the goofy camerawork of Zack D. Films. It may be ugly, but in a way it's charming. The story is told in an interesting, non-linear way. The transitions between past and present are sick. It captures the old murder mystery feel really well.

Nefarious 2023

This review contains spoilers.

This movie is like if someone tried to make an adaptation of Screwtape Letters but made the story unintelligible and dumbed everything down for no reason. Seriously, why does the demon spend half the movie convincing an atheist of the Christian faith and how murder is bad?? If the demon wants the atheist to "write his story" or whatever, why does he try to make him kill himself at the end? The demon's motivations make no sense. On top of this, the characters overexplain EVERYTHING that happens, leaving nothing for the viewer to figure out at all. Even with the spoonfeeding, it still didn't make sense because the story is just that poorly written. I liked some of the acting and the ethical question of whether someone with dual personalities is responsible for things they did unwittingly. Besides that, this movie is useless. It's marketed as a "Christian horror/thriller," but who is it even for? Christians will see this and go, "Yep, that was theology," and I don't see any non-Christian viewer being convinced by this poor excuse for a Christian argument. Just read Screwtape Letters instead.

Spider-Man: Far From Home 2019

And just when all hope is lost, Syndrome will save the day!

It's okay. Mysterio is sometimes a funny villain but he's hard to care about. His backstory monologue is F-tier exposition. The movie embraces its own awkwardness pretty well. Too many overused tropes ruin the side characters, though. There's really no single "fix" for this one. It just feels generally flat and uninspired. It's what I would call a "useless" Spider-Man movie. Life would go on if it wasn't a thing.

Excruciatingly boring. There was no creativity in the suspense scenes. A main character just stands really still for a couple minutes, a dino creeps around, and then just eventually gives up. Rear Window 1954

This review contains spoilers.

The best part of this movie is the setting. Like in 12 Angry Men, the director chose to limit the entire movie to one enclosed area, making for some very cool shots. Getting to see into the lives of Jeff's neighbors through the window is a good idea on paper but was underdeveloped in execution. The main plot is slow and predictable. It's supposed to be suspenseful but it only gets tense at the very end, then it's suddenly over. I left this movie with a feeling of "that's it?" It just seems unfinished at worst and gimmicky at best.

An incredible movie. Yeah, some parts were a little unrealistic and made me roll my eyes but accuracy isn't really the point. It's about a father's love for his son even through hardship. One moment you're watching one of the most realistic, relatable panic attack scenes to be portrayed in film, and the next you're dragged into an endlessly boring B-plot with AI-generated dialogue. Clearly they had very knowledgeable people working on this to capture Anxiety perfectly, and I actually really like the character they came up with. But the avalanche of soulless side quests ruins the whole plot. I think if this was the old Pixar, they could have nailed a concept like this. The falloff is disappointingly real.

This movie checks all of the adaptation boxes, but feels unpolished to me. It is true to its source material (I read every book, trust) and changes just enough to be its own thing. The animation looks good. However, pretty much everything about this movie has room for improvement. The pacing is a little rushed, the characters are too underdeveloped for us to care about them, the jokes are generic, etc. I'd say only watch this if you already read the series. La La Land 2016

I got the honor of watching this film with a live orchestra and jazz band playing the score in real time. It is a fun, colorful masterpiece that already feels like a classic even though it only came out in 2016. My favorite thing about this movie is the way it leaves in intentional "mistakes" to make the characters more human. The dialogue is sometimes intentionally awkward, but somehow never cringey. The score is beautiful and the musical numbers smooth. Ryan Gosling is literally me.

The Sound of Music 1965

It's been a while since I've wanted to watch a movie again right after finishing it. Some songs are sung multiple times but in different contexts, adding depth and memorability to already catchy melodies. In many musicals, the way the characters sing-talk sounds unnatural, but that is never the case here. They also take time to flesh out every one of the characters, giving the audience a sort of personal connection with the Trapp family. By the end of the story, you feel like you've lived a whole life with them. Whenever there's romance, it is never plastic. Definitely take some time to sit down and enjoy this masterpiece.

Dune: Part Two 2024

This review contains spoilers.

Compared to the first part, this movie has much more variety between scenes. It has a more complete story, allowing it to be better as a standalone work. You feel satisfied by the end instead of being left half-empty. The fight scenes are insane. You don't just get a fuzzy idea of who is winning or losing; you can feel every swipe and motion. I doubt anyone will argue with the fact that the worm riding scene is one of the best. It truly amazed me. Everyone needs to experience it at least once in their life. The score lifts the movie to another level and gives it a very distinct feel. Having watched both movies, I now feel like I'm a part of Arrakis myself. The way the story is told makes it feel like you are being transported right into it. Movies should be like this. As for minor negatives: some lines are delivered so dramatically that they wrap around to being awkward, Paul and Chani's relationship feels plastic, and the variety between scenes still has some room for improvement.

Miracles from Heaven 2016

This review contains spoilers.

A Christian movie I can actually recommend to everyone. Kylie Rogers does an amazing job at the emotional stuff for a kid. Every scene feels genuine. The story itself is one that actually has a reason to be dramatized in a movie, unlike a lot of other Christian stories that would be better off not doing so. The theme of leaving situations in God's hands is conveyed very well, too. The based dad puts his faith in God from the beginning in contrast to the mom, who has to see to believe.

I looked at the Rotten Tomatoes critic reviews for this movie and a lot of them say something along the lines of, "This movie is too preachy!" or, "No one but Christians will like this movie." I disagree. It's pretty clear that thought was put into it being interesting while also having an underlying Biblical moral. Non-Christians could definitely find some comfort or satisfaction from this, even if the faith part is not for them.

The Bad Guys is not at all a bad movie (no pun intended), but I'd be lying if I said it was great. There are a couple of furry appeals and feminist bits, but the majority of it is solid. Pixels 2015

The biggest problem with this movie is that there is no audience that will like it. If you're a kid, you'll be confused by the plethora of adult jokes fit into every single possible space in the dialogue. If you're an adult, you won't care about the nerdy game stuff. Calling this movie nerdy is a huge overstatement, though. There are a TON of inaccuracies and plot holes. It goes without saying that the dialogue (and pretty much everything anyone does) is super cringey. While watching this with friends, we noticed that it looks like it was written by some salty gamer that got rejected by a girl or something, so they made this fiction where the gamers get the girl and become liked by everybody. I could say more, but I have to wrap this review up because I need to marry Q*bert.

Groundhog Day is a hilarious and heartwarming masterpiece of a movie. This is my second time watching it now, and it is just as good as I remember it being. Nearly every joke lands, and Phil's crazy stunts are super fun to watch. Watching the first act is like watching a dream unfold. The second act has a more serious tone but is not boring or dragged out; it keeps the pace going wonderfully. The romantic scenes are the some of the best and most creative I've seen. Even if you're not into lovey-dovey stuff, I still 100% recommend this. You could compare this to The Truman Show. It has a cool quirk, it's a little bit existential, and it's eye-candy to watch. Lastly, I'd like to say that I'm glad that they didn't feel the need to explain every minute detail about how or why the repeating day mechanic works. They just used it as a medium for telling a great story, and I think that's pretty cool.

Imagine if this movie was live-action and completely unrelated to emoji or phones. You wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. This movie had no reason to be about emoji. Ignoring all of the meta jokes and the Textopolis setting, this is just another cheap love story with a weak moral. They only made this movie the way they did so it would "appeal to the teens." You know what I say? Stop trying to appeal to the teens. As a teen, I want to watch something grown-up and better than me so that I can think about it and learn. I don't want to watch something that has been dumbed down to my level. THERE IS NO POINT. This movie is REALLY messy. The costume and world designs are unpleasant to watch, the dialogue feels uninspired, and the action scenes are mid. However, as a lot of people have already said, Rocket's backstory is well done and actually did make me feel sorry for him. I'm going to say it: the only genuinely good scenes in this movie are the ones of Rocket's past; the rest are lame. I feel like this movie was trying too hard to be quirky and different sometimes to the point where anything goes as long as it hasn't been done before. It's like they were only going for the shock factor with some of the scenes. Overall I didn't enjoy my time watching this but at least I learned how it feels to eat without watching YouTube.

Bo Burnham: what. 2013

This review contains spoilers.

Bo is one of the funniest and most unique comedians I've ever seen. I've binged almost his entire channel recently and got to see this special that he made free-to-view on YouTube. Some of his sketches here aren't perfect (they are EXTREMELY hit or miss), but he never fails to keep the interest of his audience. The short one hour runtime contains so many songs that are impossible to get unstuck from your head once you hear them, including Sad, We Think We Know You, and Repeat Stuff. Sad is my favorite song by Bo and happens to also be the most family-friendly; definitely give it a listen. We Think We Know You features THE most creative song performance I have ever seen and makes for an absolutely spot-on finale. Bo does the Hitler salute during Repeat Stuff. A few of his jokes hold this back from being a 90 or higher, but don't get me wrong; the good jokes more than outnumber the bad. From God's Perspective is a song that I thought was kind of weird starting out, but then he suddenly brings out the line, "If you want love, then the love has got to come from you." Genius. This pattern of a goofy song turning deep is in a lot of Bo's songs, which is really cool.

This review is more about Burnham in general than specifically this special because I probably won't get a chance to watch any others by him any time soon so I wanted to write all of my assorted thoughts out here.

It's alright. The animation style stands out the most of anything in the movie, and even that gets a little tiring to watch at times. The story is mega generic. There were LOTS of pop culture references and teenager slang lines, but I will give this movie credit for not being the worst at that. The main characters are teenagers after all, and when they goof off they do actually kind of resemble bros in real life goofing off. Still, April saying "sus" six times in the span of one minute was pretty stupid.

Shazam! 2019

This one has an okay hero concept and story, but the acting is SO bad. It looks like all of the actors just want to go home, which is fair because they had to say some really cringey stuff. The villain is just okay, the CGI below average, the character arcs nonexistent. Basically what you would expect in a modern superhero movie.

The Little Prince 2015

This is a perfect example of a film that works great for both kids and adults. The movie starts off confusing, but works its way into a masterpiece of storytelling. The lesson of growing up but never losing your childlike personality is really deep and well-done. Seriously watch this movie if you want something innocent and wholesome.

Ford v Ferrari 2019

This review contains spoilers.

Ford v Ferrari was way better than I expected it to be. Bale's character is written and acted extraordinarily well. He is the kind of character you feel like cheering on as he pulls off his racing feats. The cinematography is insane, especially during the racing scenes. It blows Top Gun: Maverick's action scenes out of the water, honestly. This movie has a very long two hour, thirty minute runtime, and they probably could've cut out some unnecessary scenes to shorten it. Another minor peeve is how deep it tries to get sometimes. By the end of the final race, the movie tries to tie itself up at the end with inspirational lines, but it doesn't really make sense here. Fun movie; do recommend even if you're not big on cars or racing. I'm not and I still enjoyed it.

Hop 2011

This review contains spoilers.

This movie is... not an abomination, surprisingly. It has good intention, but just flops at everything it tries to do. The story is incredibly stupid, and the CGI doesn't help. However, even though it sucked, I couldn't find myself mad at it or anything. It's just a bad movie, not a garbage heap like some tales about sharks that I know. Don't waste your time watching it if you are above the age of four.

The Angry Birds Movie 2016

This movie had pretty dumb dialogue. Red, Chuck, and Bomb weren't very cool protagonists, but Leonard is a good antagonist. Every scene with Mighty Eagle in it was cringe. The movie really only does get interesting when the Pigs show up. My favorite part was when Chuck told everybody to get busy.

Minions: The Rise of Gru 2022

This review contains spoilers.

This movie boasts one of the absolute stupidest stories to ever be made. It is one big nostalgia-bait with basically nothing new to bring to the table besides the Vicious Six. The ONLY cool character in the entire movie is Wild Knuckles, and he isn't even voice-acted that well. The sequence with the Kung-Fu training is just dumb and breaks the rules of the cinematic universe. The ending is lame and has nothing to do with anything previously set up in the plot. The Minions are unfunny as usual. This movie was not planned out. Don't waste your time watching this because no one sure wasted their time making it.

Interesting, but the story feels kind of incomplete. The three main characters are acted well, making them fun to watch. Actually, just every actor was fun to watch and did a good job. I don't really know what to say about the rest of the movie, though. It's a little bit forgettable.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish 2022

This review contains spoilers.

I revisited this movie, and I must say that it is better than I remembered. I think my first score of 78 was set as low as it was mostly because of the annoying dog character and some of the cringey scenes, but I now notice that I was a bit too harsh on the movie as a whole. There are only a few cringey parts; not enough to lower the score that much. This movie really is a breath of fresh air in the modern age of movies mostly comprised of corporate garbage. The animation is some of the best I've ever seen. Death is truly the greatest animated villain ever. This also has a great moral of looking right in front of you to find that everything you want is what's already in front of you. Honestly a top G movie.

Very well-written and well-shot. The story felt basic; it never surprised me. The flying scenes were cool but dragged out too long with little variety. Penny is kind of annoying. The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1996

It's just alright. The messages are really muddled and the songs aren't that inspired, but you might still get something out of it. What I did like was the mature ending that, for once, actually made sense.

Ratatouille 2007

This review contains spoilers.

This, like a lot of other old Pixar movies, is an absolute masterpiece of filmmaking. The plot isn't super complex, making it easy to understand. The concept of a rat controlling a human by tugging on their hair is such a unique idea that I am confused how someone even came up with it. I've watched this movie a few times, and each time I laugh at something new or appreciate another artistic decision I didn't catch before. I can't state enough how clean and interesting the plot and pacing is. Many movies I've watched recently have had either a really good opening with a disappointing main act, or a lame main act but a satisfying ending that makes you forget about the mistakes. Ratatouille was a breath of fresh air because it doesn't ever stop being good. Every scene feels earned. Also, each character in this movie is written amazingly. Linguini is goofy and hilarious to start out, but then turns into a sort of an unexpected antagonist against Remy. Chef Skinner is such an animated character (pun intended) and is fun to watch get mad at random things. Ego is literally me fr. It is cool to see what Remy is feeling through his imaginary friend, Gusteau. I don't know if I've ever seen that done before. I could talk more about this movie and what is good about it, but I will leave you to watch it for yourself so you can find everything else on your own. Literally a fine wine.

A never-ending pit of cringe and cliché. There was nothing unique in this movie besides some of Robotnik's acting, and that wasn't even very good. I laughed once (I counted). Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 2017

This has a surprisingly great story for a Marvel movie. All of the family lore isn't cheesy or anything, and it makes coherent sense in the story of the Guardians. The characters actually learn from their adventure and the movie even has a moral that you can learn from it. My main problems with it are how drawn out some of it is, and the occasional cringey joke.

Another great Pixar film that is deep for adults and fun for kids at the same time without compromising either aspects. As many have already said, the peak of the film is the first ten minutes. The ideas of the three carriers and Bucky returning as a villain are really cool, but the rest of the movie is a waste. It only starts getting interesting at almost an hour in. A solid movie about a cool event in Christian history. I liked the theme of inviting all to be saved, and this did a pretty good job of conveying it. However, the first two-thirds had some excellent acting and storytelling; a breath of fresh air for Christian movies.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith 2005

This review contains spoilers.

A beautiful and tragic ending to the prequel trilogy. Watching this when I was younger, I thought this film was good because how fun it was, but now with an understanding of the dialogue and the deeper themes, I have an even greater respect for it. Unlike the other two episodes, this one focuses much more on Anakin's downfall and the unfortunate punishment of those who are affected by it. All of the emotions conveyed in this film hit right. I felt sad when I saw Padme, Windu, and Obi-Wan all get slowly betrayed by the person they thought they could trust in life. The political commentary (hidden underneath funny green monkey and lightsabers) is expertly written. They mixed together fun for kids and story for adults very well. The action early on has much left to be desired, but the battles closer to the end are some of the greatest in the entire franchise. I declare this the best episode in the trilogy, and it's not even close.

By far the most wild ride of a Wallace & Gromit film yet. The classic humor stays true here and hits just as hard. The Wallace-like rabbit was my favorite character. Another funny Wallace & Gromit short film. Sometimes, you don't need a whole lot to convey emotion. Guardians of the Galaxy 2014

All of the titular Guardians in this movie work great with one another and are instantly lovable. Chris Pratt is at his best here as Quill, and honestly, I couldn't ask for a better performance. The first twenty minutes of this movie were entertainment at its peak, but then it kind of slowly loses steam. It's very goofy and you shouldn't expect anything spectacular out of a freaking Madagascar title. That said, it is one of the better ones, and didn't make me cringe for 90% of it, so that's cool. The cheesy jokes in this movie hit way more often than they have the right to. Weirdly enough, Dave was the most generic villain ever but ended up being my favorite character because of how well he was animated and voice-acted for the role.

Hacksaw Ridge 2016

This review contains spoilers.

This marks the first rated-R movie that I have watched in full. Overall, it does a good job of getting its message of peace across, but some details felt unnecessary. The latter half of the movie is also very drawn out and can feel very repetitive with large gaps between plot points at times. However, before you say that I am just missing the point, I think the grueseomeness and intensity are justified here. You really get a feel for how easy it is to end a perfectly good life on the battlefield. Desmond shows us brilliantly that sometimes, not fighting can be more courageous than actually fighting. I liked this message, and you feel happy for this unique character when he is recognized by his peers as a hero.

Avengers: Endgame 2019

What better way even is there to end this epic story? Marvel managed to bring back the emotion and chilling climax from the first movie and somehow keep it fresh at the same time. It didn't feel like a sequel; it felt like an ending to a circle that had not yet been completed. Also, the way that the Avengers win after finally assembling is a great message.
