As the main character lives through his life, he feels like years pass without warning, changing everything before he can mentally catch up with it. Amazingly, that's exactly what watching this feels like. Every ten minutes the plot goes in a different direction that you're never quite ready for, but by the end you still feel a sense of cohesion. There's bits of foreshadowing and reflection thrown in everywhere to give you an idea of what Caden is feeling without just straight up telling you. Just a fantastic use of the visual medium.

(This movie is also a great reminder to live in the moment. Caden spends a lot of his time trying to interpret his past as his present is flying by. As you'll see, he never really does figure it out until he's on his deathbed. A good lesson for us all, maybe?)

A depressing, heartbreaking film about death and human existence. Expertly portrays how short life feels. There are many layers to this movie's brilliance. Nothing in the script is wasted; every line and detail means something. It isn't really a 'comfort watch,' but it is without a doubt the best film of 2008, and probably the best film of the 2000s. Charlie Kaufman is one of the greatest writers in the film industry, and he should make more movies.
