I didn't appreciate this movie's subtle genius on the first watch, unfortunately. It's very funny and a well-done adaptation of the Odyssey. The story is a slower burn but keeps you engaged the whole way. Bravo Coen Bros., you've done it again.

Interesting, but the story feels kind of incomplete. The three main characters are acted well, making them fun to watch. Actually, just every actor was fun to watch and did a good job. I don't really know what to say about the rest of the movie, though. It's a little bit forgettable.

Great movie from the Coen Bros. that is a subtle adaptation of Homer's Odyssey. One of my favorite similarities is the scene that represents Odysseus outsmarting the Cyclops. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is curious about the Cyclops, gets clobbered by the Cyclops, but then he throws a spear at the Cyclops and he hides among the Cyclops' cattle. In O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Everett (Odysseus) is curious about Big Dan (The Cyclops), gets clobbered by Big Dan, throws the Confederate flag (a spear) at Big Dan, and he hides among Dan's fellow KKK members (the cattle). So yeah, great adaptation and an overall fun movie. This is one of the only PG-13 Coen Bros. movies, so if you are iffy on R-rated films, then this is a great introduction to the Coen Bros. It was for me.
