Knife In The Water 1962 film

This review contains spoilers.

Wasn’t sure about this in the first half but as the movie went on it became more and more clear what it was going for. It’s definitely a slow burn but it’s worth it in the end. Seems like the type of movie that gets better on a rewatch.

The polished production and creative songwriting make for an album that’s impressive on both a technical and emotional level.

Brothers in Arms 1985 album

The first 4 songs on this album absolutely carry. However the middle isn’t even bad it just can’t live up to the beginning which contains some of the best rock songs of all time. Strong album all the way through

Atom Heart Mother 1970 album

This review contains spoilers.

Listened to atom heart mother because of how long the title track is. After hearing the absolute majesty of the title track I needed to hear the rest of it. I was surprised to find a bunch of pleasant acoustic songs. Even the last song which is definitely the most experimental is pretty strong. Not sure why this album is seen so poorly by fans and the band itself

A Dream Is All We Know 2024 album

This review contains spoilers.

60’s pop rock was cool but it’s time to move on and innovate. I would love to hear an album that combines the sensibilities of the Beach Boys with modern tech, but unfortunately this album is too stuck in the past.

The Shooting 1966 film

This review contains spoilers.

There are some aspects of the direction I can appreciate but this movie’s plot and characters were just boring. It’s supposed to be tense and trippy but it fails at this due to the almost non-existent atmosphere. I was never surprised or impressed by this movie’s attempts at being weird, it just felt standard and derivative for the most part. I was taken out of the story many times due to how sloppy the filmmaking was. The editing was sloppy, the effects were unconvincing, the shots were bland and uninteresting, and the acting was inconsistent. This movie’s characters felt very poorly written, they constantly changed in ways that didn’t feel natural or earned. It didn’t feel like they were inconsistent because of an intentional creative choice but rather because the writing, direction, and acting for them was poorly done. I’m all for movies having weird approaches for characterization, but not in ways that feel sloppy and lazy. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a good example of how to break traditional characterization in a way that feels thematically appropriate and interesting. In this movie it mostly feels unintentional. There were some parts of the movie where I laughed out loud because of how poorly written the dialogue was, it has zero subtlety despite its constant insistence otherwise. The only thing about this movie that wasn’t mediocre or bad was the musical score. It was fairly unique for a western.

Terrible, annoying money laundering scheme. For some reason it was nominated for an Oscar?

Where Is The Friend’s House? 1987 film

This review contains spoilers.

A chill and wholesome Iranian movie about a kid trying to return his classmate’s notebook to him. It’s surprisingly engaging for its simple premise, the entertainment comes from the sharp pacing and variety of locations, characters, and situations. It has a great atmosphere with a ton of memorable shots. It’s very life-like to the point where at times it feels like you’re watching a documentary.

2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 film

Absolutely flawless masterpiece from beginning to end. I’ve been watching a lot of my favorite movies lately since it’s summer and this movie just never disappoints. Spellbinding, hypnotic, mysterious, ominous, creepy, beautiful, etc. Every shot is perfect, every scene is perfect, the music is perfect, the story is perfect, the sound and editing are perfect, etc. There’s not a better sci-fi movie and there probably never will be.

St. Elsewhere 2006 album

This review contains spoilers.

A very fun and creative neo-soul album. Danger Mouse’s production is incredibly complex and detailed, yet so satisfyingly perfect. Samples are used in very unique ways to create beats that can be described as psychedelic. The songs he wrote with Cee-Lo are very catchy and have all the soul in them. The lyrics are emotionally direct and authentic. Cee-Lo’s heavenly vocals elevate the already good songwriting. You might know this album from its lead single “Crazy.”
