The best movie of the year so far. It’s classic Nathan Fielder and yet it feels bigger than anything he has ever done. The level of access he has to Holmes’s life is insane. At times it made me forget I was watching a documentary. It’s an evolution of documentary filmmaking. The movie is paced very well. It makes you feel uncomfortable from the beginning and does not let go until the end. Pairing Fielder with Oppenheim was a match made in heaven. Fielder always explored different concepts in interesting, mind bending, and meta ways, but the visuals and atmosphere weren’t anything special. Oppenheim’s documentaries always had immersive atmospheres and impressive visuals, but the subjects weren’t anything to write home about. Combining the two makes for the perfect filmmaking duo, and I hope they become permanent partners. Going back to Oppenheim, his visuals in this movie are the best I’ve seen in any documentary. It straight up feels like you’re watching a narrative feature because of how perfectly framed and lit every shot is. There’s been discussion about this winning best picture and I am in complete support of it. Even if it doesn’t though, there is no doubt that this is THE movie of the year. Holmes has replaced Nikki as the scariest horror villain of this year.
