Rewatching The Simpsons has made me realize that it’s superior to South Park. South Park is more consistent and more “laugh out loud” funny, but it simply can’t beat the sharp satire and witty humor of The Simpsons. This season in particular has writing in it that I’m not afraid to call genius, which makes sense since it has a writing team of Ivy League graduates like Al Jean and Conan O’Brien. Plenty of episodes are filled to the brim with screwball comedy like Homer At Bat, Black Widower, Separate Vocations, Radio Bart, Flaming Moe’s, etc. But the show also isn’t afraid to have character focused episodes and social commentary. Lisa has to come to terms with the corrupt U.S. government and the burden of her intelligence, Krusty is revealed to be Jewish with a disappointed Rabbi father, Homer faces challenges with his marriage and his fatherhood, Marge suffers a mental breakdown, and Bart faces the harshness of his coming of age. The show manages to tackle these topics all while not feeling pretentious and having time for goofy, lowbrow humor. One of the best seasons of the show.
