The most basic, by the numbers way you can depict the story of Harriet Tubman. When you depict slavery in a movie, you kind of have to go all in. Not doing so would be disrespectful. You can’t sugar coat horrible things like slavery. Movies like 12 Years A Slave and Django Unchained don’t shy away from depicting the true horror of slavery. These movies are hard to watch, but their depictions of slavery are honest. They show their audience what slavery was truly like. This movie sugar coats slavery. We constantly hear how horrible it is but we never actually see anything bad. I’ve heard the argument that this movie needs to be pg-13 in order for kids to it and be educated, but if you think about this for a moment it literally makes no sense. If we are trying to show kids how horrible slavery was, we need to tell them the truth and not sugar coat it.This movie will miseducate kids if they see it. I honestly don’t care if kids can’t go see it in theaters, it’s not worth it to misinform kids on how horrible slavery was. As for the rest of the movie, it’s mostly trash. The editing is absolutely atrocious. There are so many cuts in this movie that are sloppy and serve no purpose. The cinematography looks good in some shots but it’s mostly trash. Cynthia Erivo and Leslie Odom Jr. give good performances, but so many other performances in this movie suck. The score is garbage. It sounds like every other generic action score. It plays in scenes that don’t need music at all, making the scenes even worse. The story is very poorly paced. The dialogue is cringe. Basically what I’m trying to say is just watch 12 Years A Slave instead of this.
