The fourth and final film in the mainline Shrek series, Shrek Forever After offers some insight into Shreks fundamental values and his character but ultimately did little to the overall story. I used to hate this movie because it's just a stupid alternate universe, its all a dream type of movie. But rewatching it I realized Shrek 4 actually is a movie about Shrek and his fundamentals, about him realizing how he takes his family and wife Fiona for granted. It's kinda weird to say this but really in my opinion, Shrek experiences the most growth in this movie. Yeah of course he grew in the first 3 to be an unlikely hero and all that stuff. But he still acted like a mean prick sometimes and would still be not so nice to everyone around him. But from Shrek 4’s journey Shrek came out of this loving and caring and realizing who he has to be for his kids. Still though that seems 80-90 material right there, I still mark it down just because of, well, the whole alternate reality thing. This may seem contradicting after I just gave a whole explanation of why Shrek 4 is actually good, but Shrek 4 still has the least amount of weight out of all the Shrek movies, and while Shrek did grow a lot in this movie, that's all superficial and could easily change when Shrek 5 comes out. Overall Shrek 4 is extremely underrated out of all the movies but still lacks the same spark of Shrek 1 and Shrek 2.
